Ephesos Museum

The Ephesos Museum occupies the west wing of the Neue Burg on Vienna's Heldenplatz and exhibits the finds Austrian archaeologists excavated at Ephesos and Samothrace from 1895 onward. With the Ottoman sultan's consent the finds could be shipped to Vienna until 1906, when a new law banned the export of antiquities from the empire. The collection is built around the great Parthian Monument frieze, a hochrelief roughly seventy metres long that celebrates the victory of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus over the Parthians and originally stood in Ephesos in the 2nd century. Alongside it are a scale model of Ephesos, a bronze athlete and the Pythagoras heroon from the Altar of Trajan at Samothrace. The galleries have been independent since 1978, just across from the Albertina.
