St. Francis of Assisi Church, Vienna

The parish church of Saint Francis of Assisi on Mexikoplatz in Vienna's second district was completed in 1910 as a jubilee church marking the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph's reign. Designed by Victor Luntz in Rhenish Romanesque revival style, it has a 75-metre tower and three massive apses that are visible across the Danube from the Praterstern. Inside, mosaic flooring, ribbed vaulting and the work of the Vienna Mosaic Workshop set the tone. Mexikoplatz outside was named in 1956 because Mexico had been the only state to formally protest the 1938 Anschluss under international law. The church and the square tell two very different chapters of Austrian history.
