Galata Mevlevihanesi

The Galata Mevlevihanesi is an Ottoman Sufi lodge in Istanbul's Galata district, considered one of the oldest surviving Mevlevi complexes in Turkey. Though the site dates to the 15th century, the current structure — including its circular wooden semahanesi, the ritual hall for the whirling Sema ceremony — was largely rebuilt in 1791 after a fire. Following Atatürk's 1925 ban on Sufi orders, the lodge fell into disuse before reopening as a state museum in 2011, now housing a collection of calligraphy, Sufi instruments, and dervish robes. Live Sema ceremonies are performed in the original hall Tuesday through Sunday, offering a markedly more intimate encounter with Mevlevi ritual than the ticketed evening shows staged elsewhere in the city.
