Bayezid I Mosque

The Bayezid I Mosque is an early Ottoman place of worship in the Yıldırım district of Bursa — the district itself named after the sultan who commissioned it. Bayezid I, nicknamed Yıldırım meaning 'the Thunderbolt', built the mosque between 1391 and 1395 as the centrepiece of a larger külliye complex that originally included a madrasa, a hammam, and an imaret (soup kitchen). The 1855 Bursa earthquake caused significant damage, and a subsequent restoration reshaped parts of the structure still visible today. Architecturally, the mosque represents the transitional phase between Seljuk-influenced and fully developed classical Ottoman style, with a prominent dome construction characteristic of early Bursa-period mosques. The broader complex makes it a coherent site for understanding the institutional and architectural ambitions of the early Ottoman state.
