German Resistance Memorial Center

The German Resistance Memorial Center inside the Bendlerblock commemorates the full spectrum of opposition to Nazi rule, from the White Rose students to communist cells and church networks. It occupies the east wing where Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and his fellow conspirators planned the failed assassination attempt of 20 July 1944. Stauffenberg, Mertz von Quirnheim, Olbricht and Haeften were shot in the inner courtyard that same night, a plain bronze figure by Richard Scheibe marks the spot. The permanent exhibition on two floors presents around 5000 photographs, documents and biographies covering more than 100 resistance groups. Visitors leave understanding how many Germans from very different motives turned against the regime. The Bendlerblock still functions today as the Berlin office of the Federal Ministry of Defence.
