Bell Tower of Berlin Olympic Stadium

The Glockenturm by the Maifeld in Berlins Westend district is a 77-metre viewing tower built between 1934 and 1936 to designs by Werner March as part of the Olympic complex. It originally held the Olympic Bell with the motto I summon the youth of the world, which now sits cracked in front of the stadiums south entrance. In 1945 the Wehrmacht blew up the tower to destroy files stored inside; reconstruction followed in 1962 to the original plans. From the viewing platform the panorama stretches over the Olympic Stadium, the Grunewald forest, the Havel river and on clear days as far as central Berlin. At the base, the Sportforum exhibition reflects on the Nazi propaganda behind the 1936 Games. The site is a ten-minute walk from Olympia-Stadion station.
