Olympic Swimming Stadium

Berlin

The Olympia-Schwimmstadion, officially the Sommerbad Olympiastadion, is a public outdoor pool right next to Berlin's Olympic Stadium and part of the wider Olympic site. Designed by Werner March, it was finished in 1936 as the swimming and water polo venue for the XI Summer Olympics. The monumental complex with its limestone pool fronts and the signature ten-metre diving tower is preserved in its original form and protected as a heritage monument. Today it is run by Berliner Baeder-Betriebe as a public summer pool with a fifty-metre lane pool, diving pool and a large lawn. Anyone swimming here in summer does so inside the architecture of a politically loaded era.
