Gloria Victis Memorial

Memorial honouring the victims of communism, erected for the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian uprising.

The Gloria Victis memorial was established to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian uprising and is located in the municipality of Csömör on the northeastern outskirts of Budapest. It honours the victims of Hungary's communist regime and commemorates the more than 100 million people who lost their lives under communism worldwide. The name "Gloria Victis" — glory to the defeated — is an ancient Roman commemorative motto also used for memorials at European battlefields. The site combines sculptures, inscriptions and green spaces into a quiet place for reflection on a dark chapter of European history.
