Kokonozi Mosque
Ottoman ArchitectureMosqueListed Building
Also known as: Grand Mosque of Durrës, Great Mosque of Durrës
The Great Mosque of Durres, also called the New Mosque, is the largest mosque in the port city of Durres. It sits on the main square, slightly raised on a hillside and so visible from much of the centre. The current building replaces an older mosque destroyed under Enver Hoxha's 1967 religion ban - the fate of most religious buildings in Durres. It was rebuilt after 1991 as the city's main congregational mosque, with classical Ottoman geometry of dome and a slender minaret. Inside it is bright, with carpets and modern calligraphy. Anyone walking the harbour or the ring boulevard will pass it.
