Hundertwasserhaus

The Hundertwasserhaus on Kegelgasse in Vienna's third district was built between 1983 and 1985 to a concept by Friedensreich Hundertwasser as a Vienna municipal housing block, deliberately set against the functionalism of post-war modernism. Hundertwasser designed a facade with irregular windows, lively coloured panels and undulating floors inside; he insisted on tenants taking part in the design. The roofs carry around 250 trees and shrubs, an early example of green roofs in European housing. The building itself is not open to the public as it is inhabited, but the Hundertwasser Village opposite shows the concept in a commercial courtyard.
