Hundertwasserhaus
Vienna
Opened in 1991, KunstHausWien is the only museum permanently dedicated to Friedensreich Hundertwasser, housed in a former furniture factory in Vienna's 3rd district that the artist transformed entirely according to his own principles. Hundertwasser preached the abolition of the straight line and the level floor - inside, visitors actually walk over undulating tiled floors past golden columns and tilted facade windows. The ground floor hosts a permanent exhibition of original paintings, prints and architectural models, including drawings for the neighbouring Hundertwasserhaus. The upper level runs rotating photographic exhibitions focused on ecological or socially engaged positions. The leafy courtyard cafe with its fountain is a popular spot for a break.
