Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz

The Church at Hohenzollernplatz in Berlin-Wilmersdorf is considered a key work of German expressionist sacred architecture. It was built between 1930 and 1934 to designs by Ossip Klarwein from the office of the Hamburg architect Fritz Hoeger - the same office responsible for the Chilehaus. Berliners nicknamed it "God's power station": its steep brick tower and pointed-arch interior with white brick vaults feel at once Gothic and mechanical. The Second World War gutted the interior; a restrained reconstruction kept the expressionist lines. Today the church hosts not only services but also regular concerts on the 1962 Schuke organ. Step off the bus at Hohenzollernplatz and you stand directly before the monumental brick facade.
