Chiesa di Papa Giovanni Ventitreesimo
Milan
Also known as: Otto-Wagnerkirche, Otto Wagner Kirche hl. Leopold Am Steinhof, Lemoniberg
The Church am Steinhof, also known as the Church of St. Leopold, is considered the most important religious building of Viennese Jugendstil and a key work by Otto Wagner. It was built between 1904 and 1907 as the chapel of the Baumgartner Hoehe psychiatric clinic in Penzing, then the most modern social-medical centre in Europe. Wagner thought every detail through for a hospital congregation: rounded confessionals, a floor sloping gently toward the centre for easy cleaning, holy-water fonts with running water, pews of different widths for calm and agitated patients. The gilded copper dome - which earned it the nickname "Limonikirche" - shines across the Vienna Woods. Inside, mosaics by Remigius Geyling and stained glass by Koloman Moser glitter under the dome. Visitors can join guided tours on Saturdays.
