Steinhofgründe

The Steinhofgründe are the extensive park grounds surrounding Vienna's historic Am Steinhof psychiatric institution in the 14th district, at the western edge of the Wienerwald. The site's centrepiece is the Kirche am Steinhof, designed by Otto Wagner between 1904 and 1907 — one of the most coherent Jugendstil sacred buildings in Vienna, with a gilded copper dome and interior mosaics by Koloman Moser. The broader complex was conceived as a model of progressive psychiatric care around 1900, where greenery, light, and open walkways were considered part of the therapeutic program. The meadows and forest paths are freely accessible to the public today, offering a quiet retreat from the city. From the upper part of the grounds, visitors get an unexpectedly wide panoramic view across Vienna.
