Kollwitzplatz

Kollwitzplatz is a listed green square in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, anchor of one of the city's best-preserved Wilhelminian-era neighbourhoods. Laid out in 1886 as Woerther Platz, it was home from 1891 to 1940 to the doctor Karl Kollwitz and his wife, the sculptor and graphic artist Kaethe Kollwitz; the square was renamed for him in 1947, and in 1958 Gustav Seitz placed his seated Kaethe Kollwitz sculpture at its centre. The surrounding quarter was fully restored after reunification and now ranks among Berlin's most expensive residential areas. The weekly farmers' and organic market fills the square on Thursdays and Saturdays. Families gather around the playgrounds; cafes line Husemann- and Knaackstrasse.
