Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine near Kraków is one of the oldest continuously operating mines in the world, with salt extraction dating back to at least the 13th century — its revenues helped fund the Polish royal court for centuries. Across nine levels reaching 327 metres underground, 287 kilometres of galleries were carved by miners who decorated the tunnels over generations with chapels, altars, and sculptures hewn entirely from salt. The centrepiece is the Chapel of St. Kinga, a 14th-century underground church whose chandeliers, bas-reliefs, and floor tiles are all made of crystalline salt. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1978, the mine is open daily from 07:30 to 19:30 and is wheelchair accessible; guided tours navigate visitors through the most celebrated chambers of the sprawling subterranean complex.
