Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier opened in 2001 and houses the world's largest Egon Schiele collection, with over 40 paintings and 180 works on paper, including Seated Male Nude and Self-Portrait with Lowered Head. The core was assembled by Viennese collectors Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold over more than 50 years; in 1994 they sold the roughly 5,400 works to the Republic of Austria, which set up a private foundation. Architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner clad the white shell-limestone cube as a deliberately quiet counterpart to the MUMOK across the courtyard. Beyond Schiele, the museum shows key Klimt works such as Death and Life, along with Wiener Werkstaette furniture, glass by Kolo Moser and Secession poster art. Up to eight special exhibitions a year complement the permanent display, spread across four floors.
