Lichtental Parish Church

The Lichtental Parish Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers - colloquially known as the Schubert Church - stands on the market square of the former suburb Lichtental in Vienna's 9th district, Alsergrund. Franz Schubert was baptised here in 1797, sang in the boys' choir here, and in 1814 saw the premiere of his first Mass in F major performed here, the 17-year-old composer conducting and his later love Therese Grob singing soprano. The plain late-Baroque hall church was built 1714-1730 and remodelled 1771-1783. Inside, a Schubert plaque and the grave of his teacher Michael Holzer survive. Summer concerts of Schubert programmes are a regular fixture.
