Deutschordenskirche

Also known as: Frankfurter Ikonenmuseum, Deutschordenskirche (Frankfurt)

The Teutonic Order church of St Mary in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen is the only historic church in the city not owned by the city itself but still belonging to the Teutonic Order. The Gothic core was built in the fourteenth century, the elaborate Baroque portal was added between 1709 and 1715, creating the characteristic tension between medieval nave and exuberant facade. After damage in the Second World War, the church and the commandery were rebuilt. The adjacent commandery building now houses the Icon Museum. A quiet stop on the Sachsenhausen riverbank, away from the apple-wine pubs.
