Lützowplatz

Luetzowplatz in Berlin's Tiergarten district is an inner-city public square protected as a garden monument, just south of the Grosser Tiergarten. Laid out in 1862 as an ornamental square for the Gruenderzeit residential quarters between the Landwehr Canal and Tiergarten, it is named after the Prussian Major General Ludwig Adolf Wilhelm von Luetzow, leader of the Luetzow Free Corps in the Wars of Liberation of 1813-1815. The surrounding bourgeois houses were destroyed in the Second World War, while the square itself kept its mature trees. Today busy streets cross the square; the historic garden layout with paths and beds is protected as a Berlin cultural monument.
