Luisenstädtische Kirche

The Luisenstadt Church, also called Sebastianskirche, was a Protestant church in the historic Luisenstadt quarter of Berlin-Mitte. Built to plans from the Schinkel circle, it served as the parish church of a dense working-class district near present-day Heinrich-Heine-Strasse until its destruction in World War II. The ruin was finally cleared in 1964 and the lot remained vacant for decades. Nothing of the building survives above ground, making this one of those Berlin sites where war and postwar policy erased a piece of 19th-century sacred architecture. Visitors today find only ordinary streets and apartment blocks, a quiet footnote for those tracing the lost churches of the city.
