Matilo

Matilo is the ancient Roman auxiliary fort of Leiden-Roomburg on the Lower Germanic Limes, whose traces lie today beneath a modern reconstruction in the Leiden suburb of Roomburg. The fort was founded in the 1st century AD at a strategic point on the Corbulo Canal linking the Rhine mouth to the Meuse, and it guarded the empire's northern frontier into the 3rd century. Excavations have revealed remains of timber-and-earth camps, later stone structures, a bath, and thousands of finds including coins, ceramics, and an inscription bearing the ancient name Matilo. Since 2021 the site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lower Germanic Limes, alongside other forts along the Rhine. In today's Matilo park, earthen ramparts and low wooden palisades trace the contours of the fort; a visitor center explains the finds.
