National Museum of Contemporary Art

The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, EMST for short, has been the country's leading venue for Greek and international art from the late 1970s to the present since 2000. After years in temporary locations it moved in 2016 into the converted Fix brewery on the Syngrou axis between the Acropolis and Faliro Bay, a mid-twentieth-century industrial landmark with vast low-ceilinged halls. The collection includes works by Greek key figures such as Jannis Kounellis, Jiri Kovanda, Costas Tsoclis and Vlassis Caniaris, plus international voices like Bill Viola, Mona Hatoum, Shirin Neshat and the Atlas Group. The whole basement is worth lingering over, with site-specific concrete and asphalt wall pieces. Admission is currently around eight euros, with late opening on Thursdays until 10pm. The rooftop cafe looks straight at the floodlit Acropolis and offers one of the quietest views in central Athens.
