Służew Cemetery

The New Cemetery in Sluzew lies in Warsaw's Mokotow district and was laid out in 1900 when the old Sluzew parish church ran out of burial space. Over its eleven hectares lie tens of thousands of Varsovians, including victims of the 1939 bombardment, Home Army fighters who fell in the Warsaw Uprising, and people executed in the Stalinist show trials of the late 1940s. A dedicated memorial quarter remembers the prisoners of the Mokotow prison, where the communist security service UB shot hundreds of Poles between 1945 and 1956. Quiet linden and birch avenues make it a contemplative place, far less crowded than the better-known Powazki cemetery.
