Niendorfer Gehege

Niendorfer Gehege is one of Hamburg's largest contiguous deciduous forests, covering 565 hectares in the city's northwest across the districts of Niendorf, Schnelsen, and Eidelstedt. The name 'Gehege' — enclosure — refers to a historic game preserve that survives to this day: fenced areas allow close-up observation of fallow deer and wild boar, making it a popular destination for families. An extensive trail network accommodates walkers, joggers, cyclists, and riders, with a traditional forest restaurant serving as a natural gathering point. On weekends it draws large crowds from surrounding neighborhoods; quieter weekday visits on the more remote paths offer a genuine sense of woodland solitude.
