Nollendorfplatz in Berlin's Schoeneberg is both a major transport hub and the emotional centre of the city's queer scene. At the U-Bahn entrance a pink granite stele has commemorated the homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism since 1989, and in the 1920s the quarter around Motzstrasse was the setting for Christopher Isherwood's stories that later became the musical Cabaret. The 1902 station, served by four U-Bahn lines, shows its distinctive steel-and-glass hall on the northern side. Today leather bars, cafes and rainbow flags ring the square, and in summer Motzstrasse is closed off for the lesbian-gay street festival.
