Omonoia Square

Omonia Square is one of the most central squares of Athens, the northwestern corner of the so-called commercial triangle linking Syntagma, Monastiraki and Omonia. The square was laid out in 1846 as Otto Square after the first king of modern Greece; after the constitutional uprising of 1862 it gained its present name Omonia, meaning concord. The two main commercial streets Stadiou and Panepistimiou begin here. Until lines 2 and 3 were built, the Omonia metro station on line 1 was the only underground stop in central Athens. The square itself has been remodelled several times, most recently in 2020 with a large central fountain. Today Omonia is a busy, sometimes restless urban space, in heavy use day and night.
