Palacio de Monterrey

The Palacio de Monterrey is an unfinished 16th-century aristocratic palace in Salamanca and one of the finest expressions of the Plateresque style — a distinctly Castilian idiom that covers Renaissance structures in densely carved ornament reminiscent of silversmithing. Construction began around 1539 under the Zúñiga y Fonseca family, but only one wing of the intended four-sided courtyard palace was ever completed, leaving a permanent architectural ellipsis in the city's skyline. Its tall corner towers capped with pierced stone balustrades and a richly decorated sandstone portal are the defining features. Still in private ownership of the House of Alba today, the palace is viewable only from the street, lending it a quietly exclusive presence among Salamanca's celebrated golden-stone monuments.
