Castello dei Pio

The Castello dei Pio — also known as the Palazzo dei Pio — is an expansive castle complex at the heart of Carpi, Emilia-Romagna, its fabric spanning the 11th through 17th centuries. For generations it served as the seat of the Pio di Carpi family, who progressively transformed a medieval fortress into a Renaissance palazzo, adding arcaded courtyards and ceremonial halls layer by layer. Designated a national monument of Italy, it stands between the Piazza dei Martiri and the Piazzale Re Astolfo, anchoring Carpi's medieval center in a way few other buildings can. Today the complex houses museums and civic spaces, allowing visitors to move through distinct architectural strata — Romanesque core walls giving way to Renaissance refinement — in a single, walkable ensemble.
