Nunnery

The Rahibe Manastırı is a Byzantine rock-cut nunnery carved into the volcanic tufa landscape on the edge of Göreme in Cappadocia. Like most religious structures in the region, it was hewn during the early to middle Byzantine period, when communities excavated churches and monastic cells directly into the soft rock for protection and natural insulation. Wall frescoes depicting biblical scenes and saints survive in comparable nearby cave churches, and remnants likely remain here too. The site sits within the broader Göreme Open Air Museum area, a UNESCO World Heritage zone containing the densest concentration of Byzantine cave churches in Turkey, and draws visitors looking for a quieter counterpart to the more heavily trafficked monastery complexes nearby.
