Göreme National Park

Göreme National Park in Turkey's Cappadocia region combines a dramatic volcanic landscape of tuff-stone fairy chimneys with one of the world's densest concentrations of early Christian rock-cut churches, earning UNESCO World Heritage status in 1985. From the 4th century onward, Christian monks carved chapels, refectories, and entire monastery complexes directly into the soft volcanic rock. The 11th-century Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is a highlight: its near-total lack of windows preserved an exceptional fresco cycle depicting scenes from the life of Christ, including one of the oldest known portrayals of the Last Supper. Visitors hike through several interconnected valleys discovering hidden chapels and abandoned cave dwellings, with audio guides available at the open-air museum entrance. Hot-air balloon flights at sunrise offer a sweeping view across the entire tuff plateau that has become one of the park's defining experiences.
