City Gate

The City Gate of Valletta — known in Maltese as Bieb il-Belt, meaning 'door of the city' — is the main formal entrance to Malta's capital, a UNESCO World Heritage city since 1980. The original baroque gate was badly damaged in World War II, and a 1964 replacement was widely considered an architectural failure for decades. In 2014 the Italian architect Renzo Piano redesigned the site: a clean geometric incision through the ancient bastion wall, flanked by a new Parliament building clad in Malta's characteristic golden limestone. Crossing the threshold places visitors at the top of Republic Street — the city's main artery and the natural starting point for exploring Valletta on foot — with the full baroque streetscape opening ahead.
