Czar Peter House

The Czar Peter House in Zaandam — not Amsterdam — is a tiny wooden worker's cottage built in 1632, among the oldest surviving timber structures in the Netherlands. In the summer of 1697, Tsar Peter I of Russia lived here for just over a week under the alias 'Peter Michailov', hoping to learn Dutch shipbuilding techniques incognito as part of his Grand Embassy; the knowledge he gained helped shape the modern Russian navy. The disguise failed almost immediately: curious Zaandam locals recognized the two-metre-tall tsar, turning a planned undercover study trip into a very public spectacle. Today the diminutive cottage is preserved inside a protective brick shell and forms part of the Zaans Museum, open Monday to Sunday 10:00–17:00. Its single room gives the visit an unusually intimate sense of scale.
