2017 Manchester Arena Bombing

On 22 May 2017, a suicide bomber detonated a device packed with nuts and bolts in the foyer of Manchester Arena as concertgoers were leaving an Ariana Grande show, killing 22 people and injuring more than 1,000 — the deadliest terrorist attack in the UK since the 7 July 2005 London bombings. The victims were predominantly young people and teenagers. A permanent memorial near the arena commemorates the 22 dead; a public remembrance ceremony is held each year on the anniversary. The bee, long a symbol of Manchester's industrial heritage, was adopted citywide after the attack as an emblem of solidarity and resilience.
