Barton Swing Aqueduct

The Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal on a steel water trough that can pivot to let larger vessels pass below — making it the world's only moveable navigable aqueduct. Designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and opened in 1894 by Andrew Handyside and Company, it replaced James Brindley's original 1761 masonry aqueduct, which had to be demolished when the Ship Canal was cut through. The swinging trough retains roughly 800 tons of water in motion as it rotates on a central pier, a feat of Victorian hydraulic engineering that has no parallel anywhere on earth. Visitors watching from the adjacent Barton Road Swing Bridge — which opens in tandem — can witness the full manoeuvre, a working demonstration of late-19th-century canal infrastructure that remains in regular operational use today.
