Arley Hall and Gardens

Arley Hall is a country estate in Cheshire, around 8 miles north of Northwich, rebuilt between 1832 and 1845 for Rowland Egerton-Warburton to designs by architect George Latham. The red-brick house deliberately evokes the Jacobean Renaissance style — a Victorian-era nostalgia for the Jacobean period common among English country houses of the time. The gardens are arguably the greater draw: the Double Herbaceous Border, laid out in 1846, is considered one of the earliest surviving examples of its kind in England and a forerunner of the planting traditions later championed by Gertrude Jekyll. Visitors today can explore walled gardens, pleached lime avenues, and woodland walks across the estate grounds.
