Alpineum

The Alpineum is a compact specialty museum in Lucerne housing five large-scale panoramic paintings of the Swiss Alps, created around 1901 by the father-and-son painters Ernst Hodel Senior and Ernst Hodel Junior. Spanning several hundred square metres of canvas in total, the works belong to a tradition of Alpine panorama art that captivated mass audiences in the late 19th century, long before photography and film made mountain imagery commonplace. Situated directly opposite the Lion Monument and a short walk from the Glacier Garden, the museum sits in Lucerne's densest historical district. Designated a Swiss cultural asset of regional significance, it offers an unhurried, intimate contrast to the city's larger institutions.
