Bahnhofstrasse
Zurich
Also known as: Grandhotel Dolder, Dolder Grand
Perched on the wooded Zürichberg hill, the Dolder Grand opened in 1899 as a Heimatstil resort hotel and was dramatically expanded in 2008 by architect Norman Foster with a sweeping contemporary glass structure linking the original towers. From its early years, the hotel drew Zürich's elite with its own rack railway from the city and a natural ice rink — a tradition that continues today as one of the few outdoor rinks within a European city's limits. The property houses a private art collection featuring works by Dalí, Warhol, and Miró, displayed throughout the interior for guests and visitors. The terrace looks out across Lake Zürich toward the Alps, offering one of the clearest urban panoramas in Switzerland on a good day.
Foster + Partners' 2008 extension of the 1899 spa hotel on Adlisberg — viewing terrace with lake and Alpine panorama.
