Burgruine Vilsegg

The Vilsegg castle ruin is what remains of a medieval fortification perched on a wooded hillside in the Tyrolean border region, roughly one kilometre northwest of the small town of Vils and just a short distance from the German-Austrian frontier near Füssen. The precise dates of its construction and abandonment remain poorly documented — only fragmentary stone walls survive today, gradually being reclaimed by the surrounding forest. Protected as a listed monument under Austrian heritage law, the site sees little intervention. The walk up through mixed woodland rewards visitors with views over the Vils valley and the Alpine foothills toward Füssen, making it a quiet detour on longer hiking routes through this cross-border landscape.
