Alte Burg

The Alte Burg is a 13th-century lowland castle sitting directly on the Moselle riverbank in Koblenz's old town, beside the medieval Balduin Bridge. Once a residential stronghold of the Archbishops of Trier, it served over the centuries as a barracks, pawnshop, and prison before its sole surviving structure — the medieval Burghaus — was repurposed as the Koblenz city archive. The archive holds historical documents spanning the city's history from the medieval period to the present. From the outside, the rough-stone building offers a striking riverside silhouette alongside the Balduin Bridge, one of the oldest surviving stone bridges in Germany.
