Amalie Skram

This public artwork commissioned by Bergen Kommune commemorates Amalie Skram (1846–1905), the foremost Norwegian-Danish naturalist writer of her era and one of Scandinavia's earliest voices for women's rights. Raised in Bergen, Skram drew on the harsh coastal life of western Norway for her four-volume cycle 'Hellemyrsfolket' (1887–1898), regarded as a landmark of Scandinavian literary naturalism. She is equally known for 'Professor Hieronimus' and 'Paa St. Jørgen', semi-autobiographical novels that exposed the involuntary psychiatric institutionalisation of women in the nineteenth century. The memorial is wheelchair-accessible and maintained by the city of Bergen.
