Statue of Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau

Also known as: General Leopold Fürst von Anhalt-Dessau

The Dessau Monument on Zietenplatz in Berlin-Mitte depicts Prussian Field Marshal Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau, known as the "Old Dessauer" (1676-1747). The marble statue belongs to an ensemble of generals' monuments that Frederick the Great commissioned from 1769 onward on Wilhelmplatz to honour the heroes of his Silesian Wars. Created in 1828, it ranks among the masterworks of the Berlin school of sculpture and commemorates the Prussian military elite of the 18th century. After war damage and relocations the monument now stands on Zietenplatz near Wilhelmstrasse. The finely worked uniform and stance reward a close look.
