Zermatt railway station

Zermatt station is the terminus of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn and the sole motorized entry point into Zermatt, one of the Alps' best-known car-free resorts. The metre-gauge line opened in 1891 as the Visp-Zermatt-Bahn, making it one of the earliest mountain railways in Switzerland. Since 2003 the route has formed part of the MGB network and serves as the western leg of the Glacier Express, one of the world's most celebrated panoramic rail journeys running all the way to St. Moritz. The station forecourt offers an immediate view of the Matterhorn's distinctive silhouette, and onward connections to cable cars, ski lifts, and hiking trails depart from within walking distance. Since private cars are banned in Zermatt, the station functions as the central hub for all arrivals, from day-trippers to long-stay alpinists.
