Bargylia

Bargylia is an ancient coastal city in the Carian region of Asia Minor, its ruins occupying a peninsula near the modern Turkish settlement of Boğaziçi in Milas district, Muğla Province. The site's geography was distinctive: a sheltered bay connected to the Aegean only through a narrow natural channel effectively made the city an island fortress on the landward side. Ancient sources suggest the settlement bore the earlier name Andanos before becoming known as Bargylia. Mapped under the name 'Varvil' during 19th-century topographical surveys, that designation has since vanished from the region entirely. The site remains largely unexcavated, making it of interest primarily to those drawn to obscure classical archaeology rather than visitors seeking developed heritage infrastructure.
