Basilica dei Fieschi

The Basilica dei Fieschi — formally San Salvatore — sits in the hamlet of San Salvatore in the municipality of Cogorno, east of Genoa, and is considered one of the finest surviving Romanesque sacred buildings in Liguria. It was built in the mid-13th century under the patronage of the powerful Fieschi family, whose most prominent member, Pope Innocent IV, lends his name to the square in front of the church. The structure blends a Romanesque core with early Gothic detailing and has been a protected monument since 1860, holding the honorary title of Basilica minor since time immemorial. Visitors encounter an exceptionally well-preserved medieval church complex, paired with the adjacent church of San Salvatore, and largely removed from the tourist crowds of Genoa's historic centre.
