Bellfontaine Bridge

The Bellefontaine Bridge is a steel truss railroad bridge spanning the Missouri River between St. Charles County and St. Louis County, Missouri, opened in 1893 as part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's northern double-track route into St. Louis. It was designed and built under the supervision of George S. Morison, one of the most prolific railroad bridge engineers of the Gilded Age, who simultaneously oversaw the adjacent Alton Bridge across the Mississippi. The structure is a concrete artifact of the late-19th-century rail expansion that stitched the American Midwest together across its major river barriers.
