Schloss Fürstenau, historically known as the Bishop's Castle or Lower Castle, stands at the heart of Fürstenau — the smallest city in Switzerland by area, in the canton of Graubünden. Together with the adjacent Schloss Schauenstein, it once formed a medieval fortification complex controlling the strategic passage through the Domleschg valley. The ensemble is classified as Swiss cultural heritage of national importance (Klasse A). Visitors encounter a remarkably intact medieval townscape where castle, church, and historic alleyways coexist within a few hundred meters — a place where the word 'city' takes on a strikingly modest, ancient meaning.
