Kocatepe Mosque

Kocatepe Mosque is the largest mosque in the Turkish capital Ankara, its four minarets and broad central dome forming a landmark silhouette over the Kocatepe district south of the old city. Completed in 1987, the mosque had an unusually long gestation — planning began in the 1940s but stalled repeatedly amid Turkey's debates over secularism and public religion. An early modernist design was ultimately scrapped in favor of the current neo-Ottoman style, consciously echoing the great imperial mosques of Istanbul. The interior features Iznik-inspired tilework and large-scale calligraphy panels. Open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times, the surrounding plaza offers open sightlines across the modern Ankara skyline.
