Bursa Grand Mosque

The Bursa Grand Mosque — Ulu Cami in Turkish — is a landmark of early Ottoman architecture and has defined the historic center of Bursa since the late 14th century. Sultan Bayezid I commissioned it following his victory at the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396: according to tradition, he had vowed to build twenty mosques but instead erected one with twenty domes as a compromise. The interior is organized on a grid of four by five domes resting on twelve massive piers, a structural formula rarely replicated in mosques of the same era. A large ablutions fountain sits beneath an open oculus at the center, surrounded by exceptional examples of Ottoman calligraphy inscribed directly onto the walls. The mosque remains an active place of worship today, drawing both Friday congregations and visitors drawn to its archaic grandeur and rare early-Ottoman spatial composition.
