Brandenburger Tor
Brandenburger Tor station is an S-Bahn and U-Bahn interchange in central Berlin's Mitte district, sitting directly beneath the iconic gate that gives it its name. The S-Bahn level opened in 1936 as part of the Nazi-era North-South tunnel — one of the most ambitious urban rail projects of the time. During Berlin's division, the station fell within the sealed border zone and became a ghost station: trains passed through without stopping, its platforms empty and inaccessible for decades. After reunification it was gradually brought back into service, with the deep-level U5 platform added as late as 2009. The S-Bahn section retains protected architectural elements from the 1930s and is listed as a Baudenkmal.
